Innovation Proposal: Project Based Learning, Meet Blended Learning

Dear Teachers and Administrators in LISD,

As a campus, we are accustomed to giving students agency while collaborating on authentic learning experiences through project-based learning. This has increased student achievement and engagement. Imagine what could happen if we combine PBL with a blended learning model.  The opportunity to provide a high-quality, student centered, personalized learning experience to every child can be leveraged with a blended learning model.

Like project-based learning, blended learning environments give teachers and students the power to transform learning. Both models encourage student agency and ownership through authentic learning. While project-based learning focuses on collaboration, blended learning focuses on personalizing learning for individual students with a path that is tailored for their needs, abilities, and interests. We know that collaboration is preparing students for the jobs of the future. However, It is equally important to be self-driven and focus on personal learning as well. Combining these two innovative methods will create a dynamic duo sure to prepare students for the world ahead.

In a traditional classroom environment, students depend on the teacher to deliver instruction. When delivering whole group instruction, often student’s attention drifts, and they inquire about when they can work on projects, or rotate through centers.  Whole group instruction is their least favorite delivery method regardless if the lesson is engaging. Small group instruction is where the magic happens and when I see smiling student faces. It is time to get rid of the one size fits all model and personalize learning.

There are many benefits of implementing blended learning. It allows ample amount of time to focus on small group instruction that facilitates learning and discussions. It is flexible, agile, and provides opportunities for customization. It is proven to maximize student engagement that propels achievement. This is why I am so excited about piloting blended learning in my classroom.

I am proposing to pilot a blended learning model in my classroom in which:

  • Students will spend time on their PBL and collaborate

  • Students will spend a percentage of time independently learning online

  • Students will receive data backed instruction tailored to their skill level with the teacher

  • Students will sit through minimal whole group instruction. This model will only be used to give instructions that benefit the entire class to move forward with the rotation.

Closing gaps and extending student knowledge is the main goal of this pilot program. Not every student in the class should receive the same instruction. This year, more than any year, students need our focus and attention on what they need. Blended learning coupled with PBL can make this happen. Students deserve personalized learning, and I would like your support. Fortunately, we have the technology and programs in place. All I need is your support. In return, I promise to report data and extend my findings with my colleagues within LISD.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Rachel Hull
